Events

Events are hosted monthly with every second month being a topic focused round-table discussion and alternate months being an informal discussion format.

NEXT MEETING

Workshop: Elixir

Date: Thursday June 09th, 2016
Time:6:00pm to 8:00pm
Location:Center for Open Science

210 Ridge McIntire Road
Suite 500

We'd like to steal an idea from DevOpsCV and devote June's meeting to a workshop on the Elixir language. We'll be going through the tutorial found at https://howistart.org/posts/elixir/1. Attendees will each work through the tutorial while one of us leads the process and facilitates.

Topic: The Trouble with Building Libraries

Date: Wednesday January 09th, 2013
Time:6:00pm
Location:Inova Solutions

110 Avon Street
Charlottesville, VA

Reuse in software engineering is frequently desirable but is often harder than expected to efficiently implement and maintain.  A common pattern for reusing code between applications is to build/extract a library or framework.  Challenges arise in getting the level of abstraction right and trade-offs exist between the qualities of flexibility, ease of consumption, stability, maintainability and usefulness. In this moderated discussion, we will discuss our experiences creating libraries.

Topic: Caching Technologies & Patterns

Date: Wednesday October 10th, 2012
Time:6:00pm to 8:00pm
Location:McIntire School of Commerce

Room 260, 125 Ruppel Drive
Charlottesville, VA

Caching is a fundamental concept in computer science and is pervasive in most technology, yet it is often complicated and hard to get right in practice. Stuart will frame the conversation with an overview of the basics of temporal locality, spatial locality, coherence and availability in the context of software we're likely to develop.

It's a fascinating topic and several of us have experience with distributed caches which should lead to an interesting discussion.

Open Format

Date: Wednesday September 12th, 2012
Time:6:00pm to 8:00pm
Location:Elder Research, Inc

300 W Main St # 301
Charlottesville, VA 22903

This months meeting will be our bimonthly open format discussion.  Once again Elder Research has generously agreed to host us. In addition to the usual allure of discussing top-of-mind software topics with peers, this meeting could be a good opportunity to gauge interest on ideas for talks at beCamp, coming up on September 28th.

Topic: Pragmatic Testing

Date: Wednesday August 08th, 2012
Time:6:00pm to 8:00pm
Location:McIntire School of Commerce

Room 260, 125 Ruppel Drive
Charlottesville, VA

This month’s conversation will focus on the various approaches that we, as developers, take to verify the correctness of our code. Ranging from manual testing and REPL’s through unit testing harnesses, we’ll explore the granularity, repeatability/fragility, effort required and confidence induced by different methods.
